Photography's dead ends.
The history of the camera is full of roads that led nowhere: stereoscopy, which promised depth and ended up a fad; the bellows, which made large-format cameras foldable until metal and plastic made it unnecessary; half frame, which doubled the shots per roll back when film was expensive.
None of those ideas won, and that is exactly why the pieces that embodied them are now the hardest to find complete and working.
