A rangefinder has no mirror: it focuses by overlapping two images through optical triangulation. That makes it smaller, quieter and free of mirror slap, which is why it was the photojournalist's camera for decades. It is also the largest block in this collection.

Why there are so many Leica copies.
After the Second World War, German patents became available as war reparations. That is where the Soviet FED and Zorki come from, along with Canon's Japanese L39-mount bodies and half a dozen other makers who copied the Leica almost screw for screw.
Those copies are now the cheapest way into rangefinder shooting: the mechanics are simple, parts still exist, and L39 lenses can be swapped between brands.
